Theglobalcirculationofcomics,manga,andothersuchvisualmediumsbetweenNorthAmericaandAsiaproducestransnationalmeaningsnolongerrootedinaseparationbetween“Asian“and“American.“DrawingNewColorLinesexplorestheculture,production,andhistoryofcontemporarygraphicnarrativesthatdepictAsianAmericansandAsians.ItexamineshowJapanesemangaandAsianpopularculturehaveinfluencedAsianAmericancomics;howthesecomicsandAsianAmericangraphicnarrativesdepictthe“look“ofrace;andhowthesevariousrepresentationsareinterpretedinnationsnotoftheirproduction.ByfocusingonwhatgraphicnarrativesmeanforaudiencesinNorthAmericaandthoseinAsia,thecollectiondiscusseshowWesterntheoriesaboutthewaysinwhichgraphicnarrativesmightsuccessfullyoverturnderogatorycaricaturesarethemselvesbasedoncontestedassumptions;andillustratesthattheso-calledodorlessimagesfeaturedinJapanesemangamightneverthelesselicitinterpretationsaboutraceintransnationalcontexts.WithcontributionsfromexpertsbasedinNorthAmericaandAsia,DrawingNewColorLineswillbeofinteresttoscholarsinavarietyofdisciplines,includingAsianAmericanstudies,culturalandliterarystudies,comicsandvisualstudies.
